What We Do
Instrumental Lessons
The Young Academy offers tuition in piano, keyboard, saxophone, flute, singing and musical theatre. The Academy also offers lessons in music theory.
While lessons are based on the ABRSM and Trinity classical syllabuses, pupils explore additional repertoire throughout the year. This can include a variety of genres, from jazz and blues to rock and modern pop music.
Lessons take place in the Young Academy Studio in Pinner, a beautiful venue which is home to a magnificent grand piano.
Many instrumental pupils have gone on to represent the Young Academy in local orchestras and have played with national ensembles such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Singers. Singing students have been selected for prominent roles in musical theatre productions including Annie, the Sound of Music and Les Miserables.
Concert Opportunities
We hold concerts throughout the year at impressive local venues, in which all pupils can showcase their work. Pupils perform individually and in group musical theatre items. In the past these have included works from musicals such as Oliver! and Mary Poppins. Pupils have also taken part in charity concerts at local care homes as a means of giving something back to the community.
Speech and Language Training
We also specialise in English tutoring and speech development. This covers training in reading, speaking, elocution, presentation and the English language. We prepare students for both primary and secondary school entrance exams with coaching tailor-made for local schools including:
- Orley Farm School
- Merchant Taylors School
- Haberdashers Askes School
- Watford Grammar School
- St. Helens School
Students have the opportunity to gain the highly regarded London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) qualification in spoken English.
Interview Training
The Young Academy offers interview training for school and university entrance exams as well as for the workplace. Confidence is crucial for success in all interview situations and we focus on ensuring that candidates are relaxed and self-assured at interview.
